At year-end 2021:

  1. the percentage  of all U.S. retirement accounts held in IRAs were 35%.
  2. the total assets held in IRAs (including traditional and Roth IRAs, SEP IRAs and SIMPLE IRAs) was $13.9 trillion.
  3. the percentage of total IRA assets held in Roth IRAs was 9.4%.
  4. the percentage of U.S. households that held IRAs, including traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, was 37%.
  5. the percentage of traditional IRA owners who consulted with a financial advisor about rolling over their qualified plan account to a traditional IRA was 65%.

At the end of 2018, 35% of IRA owners held Roth IRA accounts.

At the end of 2018, the largest category of traditional and Roth IRA investments was held in money market funds (not bonds and bond funds, target-date funds, or stocks and stock funds.)

For 2017, the percentage of traditional IRA owners who made annual traditional IRA contributions was 11%.

In 2021, 57% of traditional IRA accounts contained rollovers from employer-sponsored qualified retirement plans.

Roth IRA owners tend to be younger than traditional IRA owners.

Conclusion: The ICI is an association that represents mutual fund companies and similar investment companies.
